World Cup gold for Taubitz and Orlamünder/Gubitz
Germany’s racing tobogganists continue to trump up at the World Cup. The double-seater men get gold and bronze, women silver and bronze, and there is even a double success in the one.
World Cup gold for Julia Taubitz and the double-seat specialists Hannes Orlamünder and Paul Gubitz: Germany’s racing tobogganists really clear the title fights in Canada. The team of the new national coach Patric Leitner has already won three times gold, three times silver and three times bronze before the last two races. After mixed gold together with Max Langenhan Julia Taubitz got her second single-seater title after 2021. “It was exciting and great. I’m incredibly happy,” said the 28-year-old. The sports soldier is now seven -time world champion.
Merle Fräbel surprised with silver
Overall World Cup winner Taubitz prevailed in the ice channel of Whistler in front of her teammate Merle Fräbel with a lead of 0.041 seconds. Emily Sweeney, still in the lead after the first run, became third. In the end, the American was two thousandths of the second behind Merle Fräbel. “I lack the words,” said the 21-year-old youth Olympic champion after her silver coup. “This is amazing!”
Gold trip from Orlamünder/Gubitz
Surprisingly, Hannes Orlamünder and Paul Gubitz tobogganed the World Cup gold and the first big triumph of their career. The double-seater duo from Thuringia prevailed in Whistler in front of the Letten Martins Bots/Roberts Plume and the record Olympic champion Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt.
“We dreamed of it, but we can’t really believe it. It’s just indescribable. Just mega horn,” said Orlamünder.
In the women’s race, Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal and Dajana Eitberger/Magdalena Matschina won silver and bronze. As in the previous year, the World Cup title went to Selina Egle/Lara Michaela Kipp from Austria. “We are Megahappy with second place,” said Jessica Degenhardt.
The German toboggan team has already brought nine medals after five out of seven World Cup competitions. The Whistler World Cup ends on Sunday night with the men’s one-man race and the team relay-more titles are possible.
“Hannes and Paul deservedly become world champions. They made it strong,” said Tobias Wendl the teammates. Since 2013 – the Bayern duo in Whistler has been world champion for the first time – the two 37 -year -olds have been on the podium with every major event: “We can be proud of that.”
A duo already in youth
The two sports soldiers Orlamünder/Gubitz have been a racing tobogganing double since 2011. Already in the mixed relay on Thursday, the two 26-year-olds and Dajana Eitberger/Magdalena Matschina won the silver medal. Wend/Arlt had become third with Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal.
In the men’s double-seat race, Orlamünder/Gubitz had 0.102 seconds ahead of Bots/Plume after the two runs, the six-time Olympic champion Wendl/Arlt were 0.133 seconds behind the new world masters. Record world champion Toni Eggert became fifth in his comeback season with his new partner Florian Müller and said: “We still have a lot to do.”
