Industrial activity grew 4.1% annually in January, the best start in five years

Of the 16 industrial sectors, 14 grew compared to 2019 and all did so compared to 2021.

Four sectors finished with record production levels since at least 2004: food and beverages, non-metallic minerals, unclassified machinery and equipment, and chemicals.

Paper, leather and footwear were at their highest since 2011; the automotive sector at maximums since 2015; publishing and printing, rubber and plastic, tobacco, radio, TV and communications equipment, and refining reached their highest levels since 2017, according to the official report.

In this frame, The CEPXXI pointed out that economic activity as a whole ended in 2022 5.2% above 2021 and 4.6% above 2019 and accumulated two consecutive years of growth.

In addition to the industry, in 2022 the following stood out: trade (grew 6% compared to 2021) and business activities (expanded 5% year-on-year).

Regarding employment, the report stressed that the total registered work accumulates 23 consecutive months of month-on-month growth and the rate of job creation has been maintained “since at least 2012-2013.”
