Most of the provinces exceeded the level of employment prior to the pandemic

He private employment registered in 23 of the 24 districts is already at levels higher than those of February 2020, the last month before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, according to a report published today by the Center for Argentine Political Economy (CEPA) based on official data.

With the exception of Tucumán, which in December 2022 had a level of registered private employment 2.89% lower than before the pandemic, in 18 provinces there was an increase of 5% or more compared to February 2020, while Jujuy, Salta and Chubut showed an advance between 2% and 5% and, finally, the city of Buenos Aires and Mendoza had an increase between 0% and 2%.

The batch of provinces with the highest percentage growth in employment is made up of Catamarca, Formosa, Tierra del Fuego, La Rioja, Misiones, San Luis, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, La Pampa, Río Negro, San Juan, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Neuquén , Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Santa Cruz and Buenos Aires.

CEPA’s work was based on the analysis of the report from the Ministry of Labor based on data from the Argentine Integrated Pension System (SIPA) released on Friday, March 3, in which it was specified that the number of people with registered work in the country it reached 13.07 million in December 2022, with a positive variation of 0.2% compared to the previous month (27,700 more people), while in the year-on-year comparison the increase was 4.9% (607,900 more workers).

The main conclusions

STRAIN indicated that “95% of the provinces already register more private employment than in February 2020 and regional heterogeneity is no longer observed as in previous months.”

In this regard, although it was pointed out that “CABA, Cuyo and the NOA are the regions that presented the most difficulties to recover the employment levels of February 2020”, it was evident that, even with these inconveniences, “by December all the provinces are at levels close to those registered in the pre-pandemic, except Tucumán”.

– Throughout the country, as of December 2022, “287,000 jobs have been recovered above the pre-pandemic number, thus achieving employment levels prior to the Cambiemos government (15,000 correspond to the jobs lost between December 2019 and February 2020)”, highlighted the entity.

The evolution of the sector was also characterized byr “a marked reduction in heterogeneity” in its recovery, since “ten of the fourteen sectors already operate at employment levels higher than the pre-pandemic”, alluding to construction, real estate, industry, commerce, mining, community and social services, tourism, education, electricity, gas and water, and health.

However, CEPA warned that “for the following months, it is possible that part of the heterogeneity that we saw some time ago will return as a result of a general activity that is beginning to subside, where sectors such as construction or tourism may slow down and the industry recovers its growth driver position.
