Relationship: These qualities are really important in partnerships

Relationship: These qualities are really important in partnerships

In order to enter into a relationship, certain requirements must be met. These differ enormously in different stages of life and become more and more the older you get.

Let’s start with one of the biggest clichés: women are more demanding than men when it comes to choosing a partner. This was confirmed by the large representative study by the dating portal ElitePartner. But also which characteristics are really important when choosing a partner. Is it really the fat bank account and the perfect look, as is always assumed?

For the study, 6104 singles and couples between the ages of 18 and 69 were interviewed. The loyalty factor was right at the top of the emotional points in the survey. 93 percent would like their partner not to cheat. This is a little less important to the men surveyed, at 85 percent. Characteristics such as warm-heartedness, humor, tenderness and communication also came out on top.

The partner’s appearance is less important in a relationship than sex

There were also interesting study results for the intelligence factor: only three out of four people would like an intelligent partner, so it seems to make no difference to a quarter. On the other hand, men place more emphasis on the appearance of a partner with 68 percent of those surveyed, while only 58 percent of women considered appearance to be very important. However, where the genders agree in the survey, the partner must be good in bed, at least for three quarters of the respondents.

In contrast to the past, when women often lived on their husband’s income, nowadays it is only important to about half of women that their partner is financially well-positioned and successful in their job. The old structures are still showing up a little among the men, here only a third attach importance to the professional success of their wives.

The dating portal also drew an interesting extract from the survey, broken down by age group:

  • 18 to 29 years: Women want the daredevil than a man who is adventurous. The professional success of their partner is important to younger men.
  • 30 to 39 years: Due to their age, both women and men in their thirties want someone who loves children and is family-oriented. Almost in line with this, women in this phase of life want good sex and independence in men.
  • 40 to 49 years: In the forties, women’s desire for loyalty and assertiveness increases again. Men in their forties place much more value on independence with their partner. Financial security is important for both sexes in this phase of life.
  • 50 to 59 years: Between 50 and 60, attractiveness is no longer so important for both of them. Rather, women now focus on warmth and tenderness, men now focus more on intelligence.
  • 60 to 69 years: The older, the longer the list of requirements that a partner must meet in a relationship. Only a thirst for adventure and attractiveness are less relevant for women and men than in earlier phases of life.
