Péle’s mausoleum was opened in the high-rise cemetery in Santos. The golden coffin stands on artificial turf to match the football legend.
The tomb of Pelé was opened in the port city of Santos. The Brazilian soccer hero died of cancer on December 29, 2022. The “Player of the Century” (Fifa) was 82 years old.
The mausoleum is visually based on a football stadium. The floor of the 2,000 square meter room is covered with artificial turf. The wall is covered with a black and white photo wallpaper depicting cheering football fans and important moments from Pelé’s exceptional career.
Two golden statues of the football legend greet visitors in front of the door. Next to it are two flags, one from Brazil and one from his hometown club FC Santos.
Golden coffin with cross and soccer scenes
In the middle of the memorial stands Pelé’s coffin, protected with cordons. The coffin is made of gold and marble. There are reliefs with football scenes on the sides, and a large cross is emblazoned on the lid.
“It was made with a lot of love by people who knew him and lived with him”. “So it has the essence of what he was”. He calls the mausoleum “noble, very simple and pleasant.”
The tomb is on the first floor of the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, a high-rise used as a cemetery. With 14 floors, the building is the tallest of its kind in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records.
Pelé’s father and brother are already buried in the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica.
