He became known worldwide under the pseudonym “The Weeknd”, now he wants to “kill” his stage name. Abel Tesfaye has changed his profile name on social media.
“The Weeknd” has taken the first step to bury his stage name. On Twitter and Instagram, the singer only calls himself Abel Tesfaye – his real name. However, he only changed his profile name. His username is still @theweeknd on both platforms.
The artist, who no longer wants to call himself The Weeknd, was born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye on February 16, 1990 in Toronto. He got his stage name at the age of 17 when he dropped out of high school. “Run away on a weekend and never came home,” he said. Since there was already a Canadian band called The Weekend, he dropped the E.

Focus on acting career
At the moment, Abel Tesfaye is investing primarily in his career as an actor. His series debut “The Idol” starts on June 5th on HBO (in Germany on Sky). He plays a kind of lifestyle guru opposite Lily-Rose Depp. HBO uses a compromise when announcing the series. On the homepage, the broadcaster calls the star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye.
