The forest and bush fires have claimed the lives of 115 people. The property damage is in the billions. Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson have a very personal connection to Maui and Hawaii.
TV and film icons Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have launched a relief fund for victims of the devastating fires on the Pacific island of Maui. The two stars, with ties to the State of Hawaii, donated $10 million together, but they have also asked for other donations.
“Oprah lives here in Maui. I grew up on these islands, my family is buried on these islands,” Johnson told NBC. “Rebuilding will take a long time. It will probably get a little worse before it gets a little better. But we’re doing what we can here.”
The forest and bush fires broke out in several places on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii on August 8th and killed at least 115 people. More than 2,200 buildings were destroyed on Maui, and property damage is estimated at more than $5.5 billion. Measured by the number of victims, these were the most serious fires in the USA for more than 100 years.
