Queen Elizabeth II: Groom remembers last ride

In a podcast, Queen Elizabeth II’s long-time stud groom recalled his last ride with the monarch. He said her condition worried him at the time.

Queen Elizabeth II was fond of animals, especially her beloved corgis and horses. The image of her black pony Emma standing at the side of the road during the funeral procession after the monarch’s death as the coffin drove past in a car is unforgettable.

Riding out was part of the Queen’s everyday life alongside her work. In the podcast “Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth”, the late Queen’s long-time stud groom, Terry Pendry, remembers his last ride out with his boss. Pendry was in the service of the monarch for 28 years – a special relationship.

“The very last time I was with her, I walked rather than rode. She was quite frail,” said Pendry. “In the end, she was even smaller than Queen Elizabeth [Queen Mum] in her last four years, when she was in pretty bad shape,” said the groom.

He knew she would die soon

Pendry said she found it funny that she was walking next to her while the Queen rode her pony Emma. “She looked down at me and said, ‘That hasn’t happened to me since I was a princess.’ I said, ‘What?’ She said, ‘Someone walking next to me like that,'” he recalls in the podcast. At the time, Pendry took one of the last photos of the Queen, he reveals. “I said, ‘Let me take a photo of you.’ She asked, ‘What do you want to do that for?’ I said, ‘Well, you want one for your scrapbook. Your pony is 26, you’re 96, that’s got to be a record,'” Pendry said.

The following day, he got into a bit of trouble with the monarch. The Queen accused him of being rude to her. “She said, ‘You said my age’ – and then she burst out laughing. That was just her. That was the last time I saw her,” says Pendry. He already suspected at the time that the Queen would not live much longer.
