RKI: The number of corona vaccinations per week is falling in Germany

In Germany, the vaccine against the corona virus was in short supply for a long time. Now there are sufficiently large amounts, but apparently fewer and fewer people willing to vaccinate. According to the RKI, the number of vaccine doses administered is falling.

The number of corona vaccinations per week has continued to decrease in Germany. The total number of weekly vaccination doses administered has decreased since the third week of June, writes the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in its management report on Wednesday, without giving a specific number for the past week. In the previous week (June 28 to July 4) there were 5.0 million corona vaccinations in Germany according to previously published figures, and 5.6 million a week earlier.

In Germany, 43.7 percent of people are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. According to the RKI on Wednesday (as of 10.45 a.m.), more than 49 million people have been vaccinated at least once – this corresponds to a rate of 58.9 percent.

According to the RKI, the proportion of those who are fully vaccinated varies greatly according to age: while more than 70 percent of people aged 60 and over are fully vaccinated, this proportion is slightly more than 40 percent among adults under 60. However, for most people in this age group, the vaccination campaign started later. In children and adolescents under the age of 18, fewer than 2 percent are fully vaccinated.

High vaccination rate required

From the point of view of the RKI, at least 85 percent of 12 to 59 year olds and 90 percent of people aged 60 and over should be fully vaccinated in the fight against the delta variant. “If this vaccination quota is reached in time, a pronounced 4th wave in the coming autumn / winter seems unlikely,” says an earlier RKI paper.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) has not given a general vaccination recommendation for children from the age of twelve for the time being. She recommends vaccinations only for 12 to 17 year olds with certain pre-existing conditions such as obesity. Regardless of this, vaccinations are possible as an individual decision by parents, their children and the doctors. There is currently no approved vaccine for children under the age of 12.

The plan is now to reach people who are willing to vaccinate, but who have not yet actively sought an appointment, through low-threshold vaccination offers. Some vaccination centers already offer vaccinations without making an appointment in advance.
