Kunstuni disappears behind embroidery net in March
Installation in Washington, DC (K. Allen)

LINZ. Katharina Cibulka’s “Solange” project premiered in Innsbruck in 2018 and is now known beyond the borders of Austria. One of her embroidered construction site nets with feminist messages and demands has even made it as far as Washington; the installation was on display at the “National Museum of Women in the Arts” in October 2022.

The art university and the women’s office have now brought the participative and interactive art project, which aims to draw attention to the imbalance between the sexes, to Linz.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Kunstuni, the 28th scaffolding net embroidered with cable ties and tulle will adorn the facade of the bridgehead building at Hauptplatz 8 – on the side facing the Nibelungen Bridge and the New Town Hall. It is to be hung on construction site scaffolding in March.

“The Art University, the only Linz university with a female rector, shows what gender equality means to her,” Rector Brigitte Hütter wants to set an example. For women’s councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens), the project contributes to carrying the important discourse about the still prevailing gender inequality into public space.

Cibulka is no stranger to Linz, she has been teaching at the art university since 2021, and the native Tyrolean is pleased that the academic collaboration has now also turned into an artistic collaboration. Each network is created around topics that are relevant at the respective locations, which sentence will decorate the Linz network is not yet certain.

The search for it should take place with the students of the art university, but also with the population. Sentences beginning with “As long as” and ending with “am I a feminist:in” can be sent to the women’s office by February 12 ([email protected]).
