Saving energy costs – some people apparently misunderstood this: In the “Frunpark” shopping center in Asten, the free e-charging stations for customers were first used as permanent parking spaces, now brazen electric car owners tapped into street lamps to charge their vehicles. An electricity thief was reported to the police the day before yesterday.

In the past week, the shopping center had to turn off its three free e-charging stations because long-term parkers had misused them. Project manager Josef Anreiter confirmed to ORF that cars were even charged overnight. After the electricity was cut off at the charging stations, some people would have simply plugged their electric cars into the street light socket, which is actually intended for cleaning purposes. The sockets on the masts could hardly be secured, strict controls were planned and repeat offenders were threatened with prosecution, according to the project manager.

The police do not know whether there have been several electricity thefts of this type across the country. At least one case has been reported so far. It is about a car owner who is said to have tapped electricity from the shopping center several times and over a longer period of time.
