Annoyed by misbehaving tourists, the Dalmatian metropolis of Split is introducing fines for improper behavior in public places. For peeing wildly, bathing in fountains, sleeping in parks and other public places or consuming alcohol in the old town outside of bars, 300 euros are due. Anyone who throws up in public can expect a fine of 150 euros, Croatian media reported on Friday.
Numerous escapades in the previous year
Split City Council introduced the fines following numerous incidents that upset locals and made headlines over the past year. In the media and on social networks, there were always photos and videos of mostly young holidaymakers urinating in the streets, in courtyards or even in fountains or lying intoxicated on the streets. There was also bathing in fountains, with or without clothes, and last year a couple was even filmed having sex on the sidewalk in the middle of the day. There were similar reports of improper behavior at the start of this season.
Nightclubs and Electro Festival
The city also plans to hire additional security guards during the peak season to help police maintain public order, the media reported. Split is a popular place for party-goers with its nightclubs, and the Ultra Festival in July draws tens of thousands of electronic music fans to the city.
