The Upper Austria Medical Association wants to expand its headquarters on Dinghoferstrasse and build a training center. For this purpose, the chamber has acquired the building on the corner of Dinghoferstrasse and Harrachstrasse, which is expected to be replaced by a new building. A demolition notice has already been issued.

The main building is a listed building

The six-story headquarters of the Medical Association is a listed building, as is a single-story extension in the inner courtyard. Both were built in 1939 by Alexander Popp, who also planned the Linz tobacco factory together with Peter Behrens. The new development plan, which was approved today by the local council, provides for an additional building site in the inner courtyard in the area of the corner house, a gap closure, as planning councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP) says. To compensate for the planned sealing, the parking lot in the inner courtyard further south will be turned into a green area. “We made sure that we protected the green space as much as possible,” says Prammer. A large tree in particular should not be endangered. This was originally marked incorrectly, which is why an “extra lap” was done.

Controversial parking issue

Nevertheless, the rezoning was controversially discussed in the local council. The ÖVP abstained because there were too few new parking spaces, while the KPÖ, Linzplus and Wandel abstained because there were too many for them. According to Prammer, the SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens and Neos finally decided on what Prammer called a “very good middle ground”.

It is not yet clear what the medical association is actually planning on the basis of this reallocation. They wanted to wait for the local council’s decision first, according to an interview with the OÖN. Internal project planning can now begin. According to the rough schedule, the project should be put out to tender by the end of 2024.
