The forest as a climate saver and as an important habitat for people and animals: For eight weeks we spent eight weeks in our series “Our Forest. 100,000 Trees for Austria” examines the most diverse aspects of the forest – from wood as a raw material, its important importance for the global climate and climate change, to tree science, such as how to recognize a particular tree species.

The focus has not only met with great interest from our readers – supported by many sustainable partners – but the large OÖN family has also actively participated in the campaign. Our subscribers have sent us their most beautiful forest photos, emailed us with ideas for the series and, above all, taken on tree sponsorships so that more trees can be planted in Upper Austria. Thanks also go to many companies and partners who also supported the campaign and took on sponsorships.

The look back and forward

In interviews with experts, we learned that some tree species are better able to cope with the changing climate conditions, such as Douglas fir, and that the near future will probably belong to these trees and mixed forests. Looking back, it also became clear that there have always been changes: Europe was once and now a continent of forests; around 6,000 years ago, 80 percent of the area was covered by virgin forest. Our series is now taking a short winter break and will then continue in time for nature to awaken in spring.
