Americans stopped supporting Israel

Americans stopped supporting Israel

On October 7 of last year Hamas invaded Israel, murdering 35 children, 659 civilians, 373 members of the armed forces and 71 foreigners (5 are missing). They kidnapped some 253 people, of whom 112 have already been released, leaving around 141 prisoners, of whom at least 33 have died in captivity. The injured totaled 5,431.

As with every relevant event, the Yankees conducted several surveys, whose numbers roughly coincided: 50% of Americans strongly favored military action against Palestinian terrorists, 20% at least partially agreed, 21% had no opinion and only 8% were against. Unrestricted support was greater among Republican voters (68%) than among Independents (45%) or Democrats (38%) and among those over 65 years of age (81%) than among those under 34 (27%). .

About six months passed since then.

On the Israeli side, just over 250 soldiers died in combat and 1,490 were wounded. On the Palestinian side, although Ministry of Health numbers are far from reliable, some 32,490 people died. Of these, 14,280 children, 9,340 women (non-combatants) and about 8,870 adult men (combatants are not distinguished from civilians), with more than 74,500 injured. In mid-February, the Hamas people acknowledged having lost about 6,000 “soldiers,” while the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) speaks of 11,500 to 13,000 guerrillas eliminated.

These numbers are enough – this is not a comment on the barbarity of war – to understand what is happening and how, for the first time in its history, Israel is losing the “media battle.”

According to Gallup – survey from March 1 to 20 – only 36% of Americans now approve of Israel’s military action on Gaza with 55% against (9% with no opinion). Among Republicans, 64% are in favor, among Independents 29% and among Democrats 18%.

Israel is losing the war because of the support of the Americans

Up to this point, the change in American public opinion regarding Israel has not significantly affected the figure of the president. Joe Biden, whose management receives 40% approval, this is three points more than in October, although its handling of the situation in the Middle East is one of its weakest points (47% of Democrats, 21% of Independents and 16% of Republicans support it).

This explains the turn that the Biden administration has been taking – at least with lip service – since the 8th of last month, which this Monday reached a peak when the US decided to abstain in the United Nations Security Council, with which The Yemeni motion calling for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan – from March 10 to April 9 – and which also does not condemn Hamas, was approved.

Not that the resolution will have any practical effect, but until now Biden has always stopped any proposal that could affect Israel. What we saw is a clear sign of what is to come as we get closer to the presidential elections on November 5, with a Joe Biden who will have to be tougher every day against Israel -if you want to unite your bases- and a Donald Trump who will carry the pro-Israel backpack.
