Conflicts: Report: Israeli airstrike on Aleppo airport

Israel’s air force has repeatedly attacked targets in Syria to prevent its nemesis Iran from expanding its influence in the country. The recent attacks also have consequences for the earthquake relief transports.

According to Syrian sources, Israel attacked the airport in the city of Aleppo. The airstrike took place during the night, reported the state agency Sana and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Property damage was caused and air traffic was paralyzed. There were initially no reports of deaths or injuries. As is usual in these cases, the Israeli army declined to comment on the reports.

Aleppo was badly damaged in the Syrian civil war. The devastating earthquakes in the Syrian-Turkish border region last month also caused severe damage and claimed lives. Some countries, including Iran, have since sent aid to the Aleppo region. The aid transports have now been stopped because of the attack, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. The neighboring country had aimed at arms depots of militias loyal to Iran.

Israel’s air force regularly bombs targets in neighboring civil war-torn Syria. The airports in Damascus and Aleppo have also been targets of attacks in the past. Israel wants to prevent its archenemy Iran from expanding its military influence in Syria with the help of allied militias. Alongside Russia, Iran is the Syrian government’s most important ally.
