Region in Russia pays pupils for pregnancies

Too few children are born in Russia. Many regions already pay money for pregnancy. The Orjol region is now going one step further.

The West Russian region Orjol pays students a state aid when registering pregnancy. The sum is on 100,000 rubles (the equivalent of around 1,050 euros), reported the independent “Meduza” internet portal, citing governor Andrej Klytschkow.

Russian officials try to solve the demographic crisis in which the country is located with a number of incentives to young women.

Around half of the more than 80 Russian regions have now awarded a pregnancy bonus that also extends to students. Klytschkow had signed a corresponding decree in December.

With the new decree, the regulation is also expanded to students at general and vocational schools. An age limit is not specified. In Russia, children are usually schooled in between six and seven years and go to school for eleven years.

In Russia, official information lives according to 146 million people, with independent experts specifying significantly lower numbers. The tendency is declining, although Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has been fighting the population loss for years and has proposed the foundation of large families with six or seven children.

Russia demands young women instead of career

In the recent past, several senior politicians have called for Russians for early children’s wars. Minister of Health Michail Muraschko said that women should not take care of their training and career, but first of all about the offspring. “A woman has to understand: the earlier she, the better,” he said.

Last autumn, the parliament, the State Duma, had issued a ban on propaganda for childlessness. This puts the public advertising for voluntary childlessness. Only nuns of the Russian Orthodox Church were excluded from the regulation.
