Ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin has missed Ingemar Stenmark’s legendary record of 86 World Cup victories for the time being. The World Championship runner-up raced to fourth place in the Super-G at Kvitfjell and still has 85 titles.

The Austrian Cornelia Hütter won in the Norwegian mountains ahead of Elena Curtoni from Italy and the Swiss Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami. Shiffrin was 16 hundredths of a second away from victory.

On Saturday, the American has the next chance to draw level with the Swedish slalom icon Stenmark in the downhill. On Sunday there is another Super-G on the program. The Scandinavian celebrated all his victories in the technical disciplines in the 1970s and 80s, while all-rounder Shiffrin also celebrated successes in the speed area.

Victory in the overall World Cup almost certain

The fifth big crystal ball for victory in the overall World Cup can hardly be taken from Shiffrin. With eight missing races, the two-time Olympic champion has a lead of more than 700 points. 100 points are awarded for a win in the World Cup.

The German ski racers are not participating in the fight for the title in the overall World Cup this season either. At the Super-G in Kvitfjell, Kira Weidle from Starnberg finished twelfth. Emma Aicher as 27th and Katrin Hirtl-Stanggassinger as 39th disappointed.
