23rd matchday: Tuchel’s liberation against Leipzig thanks to double packer Kane

In the first game after Tuchel’s decision to leave at the end of the season, Bayern pulled themselves together to win against RB Leipzig. Once again you can rely on the goal machine.

Thomas Tuchel didn’t watch his team’s celebration of match winner Harry Kane after the liberating last-minute win against RB Leipzig. The 50-year-old’s farewell tour as Bayern coach began with a hard-earned 2-1 (0-0) thanks to double-packer Kane in Munich’s 1,000th Bundesliga home game.

In stoppage time, the always dangerous but initially hapless Kane decided the top game with his 27th goal of the season. The striker also made it 1-0 (56′), which Benjamin Sesko was able to equalize in quick succession on his third chance to score (70′). With the late success, the record champions stopped the previous series of defeats and remain at least within sight of the league dominant Bayer Leverkusen, who are eight points better.

“I think the better team won, even if it looks like a Bayern duel. We simply played the better game and deserved to win,” said captain Manuel Neuer on Sky. Regarding Tuchel’s exit, the goalkeeper said: “It obviously reflects badly on all of us that we didn’t manage to get it with such a top coach. We now want to continue on the path professionally until the end of the season.”

Bayern are reacting

The separation decision had the effect that the Bayern leadership had hoped for – especially in terms of passion. How unstable the Munich team is in the new year became clear after the first tour. Neuer twice prevented Sesko from making it 1-1. On the RB striker’s successful third attempt, the national goalkeeper was powerless because Leon Goretzka deflected the ball during the save attempt (70th). “We came back well in the second half, there’s not much to talk about in the first half,” said Janis Blaswich, who returned to the Leipzig goal and saved well. “We had the chances to score the goals in the second half,” complained Blaswich. Leipzig missed an important point.

Tuchel was unable to make full use of his new freedom of choice without taking into account its possible long-term effects in the lineup given a long list of failures. Joshua Kimmich had to help out at right back. “He’s a complete professional,” said Tuchel about the international player’s transfer from the center of midfield, where youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic was directing.

Tuchel watched most of the action sitting on a silver equipment box. And he saw a Bayern team that tried hard, started powerfully, but which lacked self-confidence after three defeats – and initially also luck. Kane completed an attack via Pavlovic and Raphael Guerreiro with his head. Blaswich directed the ball onto the post (5th).

Sané with unfortunate actions

The current Bayern situation was repeatedly reflected in the actions of Leroy Sané. The national player, who embodied world class in the first few months of the season, wasted balls and, despite his best efforts, failed to finish on goal (34′). Sané then unfortunately blocked a shot from Kane, who even tried an overhead kick, with his back (42′). So it remained goalless at halftime against a team from Leipzig that largely lacked the sharpness of the last, outstanding victories in Munich (3:1 in the league, 3:0 in the Supercup). Coach Marco Rose struggled a lot on the sidelines.

After the break, the guests suddenly joined the game. Amadou Haidara tested Neuer with a long-range shot, Mohamed Simakan then shot over from the corner (53′). And then? Kane loosened the Bayern knot. The Englishman’s form is rising again. But there is still a lot missing in the Bayern game, including the quality of confidently defending a lead. The now snappy, determined Leipzig team achieved numerous goals, and Sesko deservedly equalized. But then, shortly before the end, Kane struck decisively a second time.
