The World Court of Moscow on Thursday, February 17, found Google guilty of an administrative offense, the company refused to remove content prohibited in the Russian Federation. This was announced by the press secretary of the court Zulfiya Gurinchuk.
“According to the decision of the justice of the peace of court district No. 422 of the Tagansky district of Moscow, Google LLC was found guilty of committing an administrative offense, the company was fined 3.5 million rubles,” Gurinchuk said.
The fact that Google could be fined 4 million rubles for not deleting prohibited information became known on January 21. Prior to that, on January 17, Google was also fined 4 million rubles for refusing to remove prohibited information.
On December 24, 2021, the court ruled to fine Google 7.2 billion rubles for refusing to remove content. According to court ruling documents, the approved turnover fines for Google and Meta amounted to 5% of the companies’ annual revenue.
On February 1, 2021, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. If it is not possible to independently assess the illegality of the content within a day, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor.
