The Federal Government wants to make its information easier to find on the Internet and thus make the work of the government more transparent.
On Monday, the Minister of State for Digitization Dorothee Bär (CSU) launched the “Network for Digital Enlightenment”, which is intended to provide cross-departmental access to reliable information on digital topics. With the project, the federal government also wants to address fears and reservations about new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) or 5G mobile communications.
So far, the information offers along the line of departmental responsibilities have been found on the respective websites of the ministries. “Especially with cross-cutting issues such as digitization, which affect the responsibilities of different departments, there has so far been no central search with which all information offers are displayed,” explained Bär at the start of the project. The concept for this was created last year as part of the federal government’s #WirvsVirus hackathon.
To begin with, the Federal Press Office, the Federal Ministry of Labor, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the Foreign Office and the Federal Agency for Civic Education and their information offerings are connected to the search engine. The other ministries are to follow in a second phase. “In a democracy, in the interests of transparent government action, it is imperative that citizens can quickly and easily find out about government issues and measures, even without knowing every individual responsibility,” said Minister of State Bär.
The CSU politician had already campaigned for a “Federal Agency for Digital Enlightenment” a year ago. However, the project was not implemented in an institution like the Federal Agency for Civic Education, but exclusively digitally. There is no additional work involved in providing the information from the individual ministries and institutions, as the data is generated automatically. The new offer can be reached at www.bundesregierung.de/NetzwerkDA.
