Internet: Google strengthens the protection of minors in web searches and YouTube

Legal requirements in some countries for the protection of young people make innovations necessary. Google wants to implement internationally standardized settings.

Google is expanding the protection of minors in its web search and on the YouTube video platform. One of the innovations announced on Tuesday is that the standard upload setting for videos for users under the age of 18 will be set to “Private”.

In addition, children and their parents and guardians will have the opportunity to request that their photos be removed from Google image search.

The location history, which shows the places visited, will no longer be able to be activated for users under the age of 18 in the future. Google referred, among other things, to new legal requirements in some countries, where they want to offer internationally uniform usage settings at the same time.

The group is also expanding the security measures that prevent children from being shown categories of ads that are only permitted from a certain age. In addition, the targeting of ads based on age, gender or their interests will be blocked worldwide for people under the age of 18 in the coming months. YouTube deactivates automatic playback for children under the age of 18 and also switches on break and bedtime reminders.
