Exhibition: 25 years of smartphones: online exhibition in Frankfurt

The smartphone has become indispensable today. They have only been around for 25 years. A lot has happened in that time. An exhibition is now tracing the triumphant advance of the smartphone.

Just in time for the 25th anniversary of the smartphone, the Museum for Communication (MFK) Frankfurt is presenting a suitable online exhibition.

«Smartphone.25 – tell me!» comprises various chapters such as “digital everyday life”, “smart stories” or “smartphone history” and tells of technical developments and also of social changes.

The digital show will be available online from Sunday. There is already an anniversary showcase next to the entrance to the MFK, in which a “Nokia 9000 Communicator” can be seen. The model, which was launched on August 15, 1996, was the first internet-enabled mobile phone.

A few months ago, the museum called on interested parties to send in old cell phones and report on their experiences with the devices. Nationwide, more than 80 people have participated so far, submissions are possible until the end of the year, it said.

The first few “Smart Stories” can be read in the online exhibition, with more to follow soon. “The personal stories of the users enable an entertaining tour through the history of mobile telephony,” said museum director Helmut Gold on Thursday. The telephones will be given a place in the collection of the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunications, which also includes the Museum for Communication Berlin.
