With names, dates of birth, and social security numbers, thieves can do a whole lot of damage. At T-Mobile US, millions of such data have now been tapped.
The American telecom subsidiary T-Mobile US has confirmed that data from millions of its customers was stolen in a cyber attack.
According to preliminary findings, a data set discovered on the Internet contained information from around 7.8 million current contract customers, the mobile phone provider announced. The attackers had also gained access to data from over 40 million former customers and interested parties.
Some of the information stolen was names, dates of birth and social security numbers. With such extensive data sets, online criminals could cause considerable damage, for example through identity theft. T-Mobile US says it is convinced that the gateway for the attackers has now been closed.
The website “Motherboard” had written at the weekend that data on more than 100 million people would be offered on the Internet, which, according to the seller, came from the company’s servers.
Deutsche Telekom holds around 43 percent of T-Mobile US, but has control of the US subsidiary through a voting rights agreement with its Japanese partner Softbank and thus fully includes it in its own group figures. More than a year ago, Deutsche Telekom secured the option in negotiations with Softbank to take over the majority of shares in T-Mobile US.
