Actually, iOS 14.7.1 is a mandatory update for every iPhone user because of the closed security holes. But in rare cases it makes the device virtually unusable by making any cellular connection impossible.
The update to iOS 14.7.1 should actually be installed on every iPhone that supports it. The version of Apple’s iOS mobile system, released at the end of July, closes two serious security gaps that, according to Apple, were actively attacked. But over the last few weeks, more and more users have been complaining about a serious problem: their iPhone can no longer find a cellular connection.
“With the update of my iPhone 11 to iOS 14.7.1 it lost all reception. The network operator is no longer found. At the top it says’ No network”, complains a user in Apple’s developer forum. He is one of many. Obviously, older devices such as the iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or even the iPhone 11 from last year are particularly affected. But there are also individual complaints about the current iPhone 12 models. In addition to the official iOS 14.7.1, the bug also seems to appear in the test version of the iOS 15, which is expected for September.
Serious mistake
What exactly is causing the problem is unclear. Apparently, the failure does not necessarily occur immediately after the update; according to the complaint posts, it sometimes occurred weeks later. For those affected, the error is extremely annoying. While the elimination of the telephone function should hardly be noticed by younger people, a missing cellular connection also means the failure of all Internet connections. The iPhone can then only be used in WiFi for internet-based services such as messenger or social media.
Unfortunately, there is no concrete solution to the problem. While in one case in the editorial office under iOS 15.0 (Beta 5), switching flight mode on and off was sufficient to reconnect, many users seem to have not found a solution even after days. Apple recommends all sorts of tips when there is no reception, such as removing the SIM card or restarting the device. However, some sufferers report that they have not had any success even after completing all the steps.
Apple has not yet commented on the problem. It is quite conceivable that the company is working feverishly on fixing the error and that an update will follow soon. IOS 14.7.1 is a hasty emergency update after the Pegasus vulnerability, which was used to spy on iPhones around the world, became known. Apple never confirmed that the update would fix the bug, but the timing speaks for it: It appeared just a few days after iOS 14.7, which was released shortly before the spy scandal involving the Israeli NSO Group became known.
