Gaming: One in ten people watch others play in live streams

Play it yourself – of course. But just watch? This has long been a matter of course for many game fans, as a new survey shows.

For many people in Germany, live streams of computer and video games are an integral part of their leisure time activities. This is the result of a recent survey on behalf of the industry association Game.

Ten percent of those surveyed have watched live gaming streams via relevant apps and websites in the past twelve months. Almost a third of them (30 percent) even watch such live streams several times a week, according to the information.

Extrapolated to the total population aged 16 and over, around seven million people watched live gaming streams last year. However, according to the information, these seven million are distributed very differently across the age groups: 28 percent of 16 to 24 year olds have experience with it, and 14 percent of 35 to 44 year olds. In the older age groups, the proportion is then well below 10 percent.

The Gamescom games fair will open on this Wednesday evening – but not in the Cologne exhibition halls as is usually the case, but due to the pandemic and, as in 2020, as a purely digital event. Until Friday (August 27), the organizers want to present numerous innovations from the world of computer and video games with video live streams on their Gamescom Now platform and on various partner platforms.
