Crime: Survey: IT security in the home office is often neglected

With the first wave of the corona pandemic, many companies still had to improvise when it comes to home offices. But even today there is still a lack of awareness of basic IT security.

Many employees are working from home in the Corona crisis – but from the insurance industry’s point of view, companies are not paying enough attention to IT security.

In a survey on behalf of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) among 300 medium-sized companies, around a quarter of them stated that the number of cyber attacks had increased in the pandemic. The GDV presented the results on Tuesday in Berlin.

At the same time, however, only seven percent of the companies surveyed said they had invested in additional IT security. At eight percent, the proportion of those who have revised their rules for data protection and IT security with a view to working in the home office is only slightly higher.

“It is understandable that many security routines were disrupted at the beginning of the pandemic,” said GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen. “But those who have not yet adapted their processes to the new situation are acting negligently and inviting cyber criminals and fraudsters.”
