Members of parliament and employees of the parties are in the focus of cyberattacks shortly before the general election. The political groups are already giving a strong warning.
For at least the third time this year, the security authorities have informed the Bundestag about cyber attacks by foreign intelligence services on parliamentarians.
As the German Press Agency learned from parliamentary circles on Friday, the SPD and Union parliamentary groups passed the renewed warning on to their members of parliament and employees this week. The portal “The Pioneer” first reported on the warning.
In a letter dated June 24, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) announced: “In view of the upcoming federal election in 2021, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is currently observing that intelligence attacks against party members are intensifying.” These attacks were often directed against private and business e-mail addresses of parliamentarians. Foreign intelligence services could then use the access gained through this “to publish personal and intimate information or fabricated fake news on your behalf,” warned the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the BSI.
The Russian hacker group “ghostwriters” is suspected to be behind a phishing attack in which an attempt was made a few months ago to get into the private accounts of parliamentarians. The Russian secret service GRU is said to be behind these IT mercenaries. Phishing is the attempt to obtain personal data via e-mails or websites in order to be able to use someone else’s identity.
