With the new version of the federal corona warning app released today, the tracking of infection chains at events is to be improved.
The official corona warning app of the federal government to contain the corona pandemic has been expanded to include an additional warning function for events.
This allows organizers to warn their guests of a possible risk encounter with a person who later tested positive, even if this visitor was not checked in via the app. The new version 2.9 will be released this Wednesday.
This additional warning procedure is made possible by a substitute regulation for the organizer. The option is approved by the health department. If, while following up chains of infection, the health department finds that a person who tested positive was at an event, it can contact the organizer. If the organizer had created a QR code for check-in via the Corona warning app, the health department can then issue a transaction number. This allows the organizer to issue a warning that everyone who was checked in for the event will receive.
The project team from Deutsche Telekom and SAP has also changed the Corona warning app so that in future it will display full vaccination protection for those who have recovered after the first vaccination. Furthermore, users who have received a booster vaccination can now transfer it to the Corona warning app.
Like previous versions, the new version 2.9 will be made available gradually over the next few days. IPhone users can manually download the current app version from the Apple store from Wednesday morning. Android users may need to be a little more patient. The Google Play Store does not offer the option to initiate a manual update.
The official corona warning app of the federal government uses Bluetooth signals to record which smartphones have come close to each other and then notifies users of risky encounters. A data protection concept was implemented that is also exemplary internationally.
As the publisher of the app, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has so far recorded 33.1 million downloads. The number of active users is below this value because some users have uninstalled the app again or have not reinstalled it after switching their smartphone.
