The Corona warning app has been downloaded almost 34 million times in Germany. The developers are now adding more functions.
The new version of the federal corona warning app is able to quickly inform users about any upcoming booster vaccinations. The project team from the Robert Koch Institute, SAP and Deutsche Telekom is thus continuing to adapt the app to the current pandemic.
The current version 2.10 will be made available gradually in the coming days. IPhone users have been able to manually download the current app version from the Apple store since Wednesday morning. Android users may need to be a little more patient. The Google Play Store does not offer any option to initiate a manual update.
With the new version, the app also makes it easier to share saved vaccination certificates. The application can now create a print version of the certificates. This enables users to save or print them out as a PDF document.
In the future, a text box will be displayed under each vaccination certificate that provides information on the current status of the vaccination status. If booster vaccinations are necessary, the app informs those affected in this box. A red point is intended to indicate to users when there is news about the certificates. This also includes information on possible problems, for example if a certificate has expired or a signature is invalid.
The official corona warning app of the federal government uses Bluetooth signals to record which smartphones have come close to each other and then notifies users of risky encounters. A data protection concept was implemented that is also exemplary internationally.
As the publisher of the app, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has so far recorded 33.8 million downloads. The number of active users is below this value because some users have uninstalled the app again or have not reinstalled it after switching their smartphone.
