Charli D’Amelio is followed by nearly 125 million people on TikTok. In a new documentary series, the 17-year-old gives an insight into her life – and also talks about the disadvantages of her success.
At only 17 years old, Charli D’Amelio is already a world star – at least on TikTok. The American is the person with the most followers on the social media platform; she is currently followed by almost 125 million accounts. That even earned her an entry in the Guinness Book of Records – as well as money and fame, of course.
But fame also has its downsides for her, as a new documentary about her shows. In the documentary series “The D’Amelio-Show” of the US streaming provider Hulu, D’Amelio gives deep insights into her own life and that of her family, but also into her thoughts, as US media report. In the US, the series has been on Hulu since this month, and Disney Plus will be showing it in Germany from October 13th.
Charli D’Amelio: “I am physically and mentally exhausted”
The US portal Vox has collected some of D’Amelio’s statements that show her problems. “I’m physically and mentally exhausted,” admits the social media star. Or: “I don’t know how much longer everyone will expect me to continue as if everything were okay.” Apparently her TikTok career is also a huge burden for her: “My job is never over.”
D’Amelio started her career on TikTok at the age of 15, posting dance videos of herself online and imitating well-known songs. Her account quickly became one of the most popular on the app, even if D’Amelio was not always undisputed. She has now published a book and a podcast, among other things, and appeared in a Super Bowl commercial. She is a superstar and role model, especially for young girls. But D’Amelio also seems to have lost part of her passion: “Dancing was what I had the most fun in life, and now I don’t like it anymore,” she says loudly “Vox” in the documentary. “Social media has robbed me of that.”
With the new documentary series, D’Amelio should become even more prominent, successful and richer – and at the same time experience even more of the negative sides of this coin. In addition to many enthusiastic comments, she is already receiving regular death threats. Her sister Dixie D’Amelio, who is also extremely successful on TikTok, also receives insulting messages on a regular basis.
Nevertheless, Charli D’Amelio does not regret having put herself and her family into the harsh light of the public again with the documentary: “Everything I said were my real feelings,” she said at the press conference at the start of the Series. She hopes that this will help people understand her better and not immediately take every rumor about her to be true.
