Facebook and other services are offline – and users are temporarily returning to “old” communication channels.
The six-hour failure of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram has temporarily changed the behavior of mobile phone users in Germany significantly.
Telephone calls were made on Monday between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., totaling 680,000 hours, as Telefónica (O2) announced on Tuesday. If you look at the same period of the previous days, the average here was around 500,000 hours. So that was an increase of 36 percent.
Since the usual chat channel did not work because of the Facebook problems, people also wrote an unusually large number of SMS: The number of these at O2 almost tripled on Monday evening compared to the previous evening.
According to the information, however, there were no significant changes in the amount of data that ran over the O2 mobile network. This was because requests to speak and uploaded photos in chats or in social services are of little consequence compared to video streaming on Youtube, Netflix or Amazon Prime. These services were available.
Technical problems with Facebook and its daughters WhatsApp and Instagram led to an outage of around six hours on Monday. Facebook explained this with a buggy configuration application. As a result, the data traffic between the data centers collapsed.
