Justice: European investigators: strike against cyber criminals

Investigators from eight countries participated in the operation. 12 alleged key figures in cyberattacks were identified.

International investigators have set up a global cyber gang. 12 alleged key figures have been identified, announced Europol and the European judicial authority Eurojust on Friday in The Hague.

The suspects are said to be responsible for “devastating cyber attacks” on large companies and important infrastructures. Around 1,800 victims in 71 countries are said to have been affected, as the European authorities announced.

The investigators had accessed on Tuesday in Ukraine and Switzerland. When the suspects’ homes were searched, cash and luxury cars were also seized. At the moment, seized computers are still being examined in order to secure evidence and pursue new leads. The suspects had not yet been arrested. According to the information, these had various functions in the criminal gangs. Some were therefore responsible for breaking into computer networks. Others would have installed the malicious software.

The criminals would often have searched the systems for months undetected, until the systems were then blocked and only released again after large sums of money had been paid. The authorities speak of the “extremely damaging consequences” of these attacks.

Investigators from eight countries in Europe and the USA were involved in the operation coordinated by Europol and Eurojust. The Reutlingen Police Headquarters was involved from Germany.
