Media: Netflix makes first games available to subscribers

The streaming service continues to expand. It now also provides smartphone games, which initially only run on Android.

After months of preparation, Netflix has started its expansion into the gaming business.

The video streaming service made the first five smartphone games available to subscribers on Tuesday. Initially, they can only be played on phones with the Google Android operating system. The implementation for Apple’s iPhones is in progress.

The first titles include two games that are based on the successful Netflix series “Stranger Things”. There is no advertising, no additional fees and no in-app purchases in the games, as Netflix emphasized on Tuesday. The Netflix subscribers get the games in the Android app of the streaming service. They are not available in child profiles.

Netflix’s plans to make games another pillar alongside its core video streaming business have been known for a long time. It was not until the end of September that Netflix swallowed the developer company Night School Studio, which was founded in 2014 and is best known for its debut game “Oxenfree”.

Since June, the service has also been trying to generate additional revenue through an online shop for fan articles.
