Digitization: KBV: “The start of the e-prescription will not be postponed”

As planned, the repository and the certificate of incapacity for work will be available in digital form from 2022. However, if the implementation fails, practices are still allowed to issue paper receipts.

The digital prescription and the electronic certificate of incapacity for work (eAU) will start in Germany as planned at the beginning of 2022.

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) and the Gematik company, which is responsible for implementation, pointed this out on Thursday. In doing so, they denied media reports that the start of the e-prescription and the eAU had been postponed to the end of June 2022.

“The start dates are required by law and cannot be postponed by the KBV,” said a spokesman for the KBV on request. However, the KBV has stipulated a guideline according to which individual medical practices may still work with paper receipts until the end of June 2022 if technical difficulties stand in the way of digitization. “This is also a sensible procedure from the point of view of doctors and patients,” said the KBV spokesman. However, this does not prevent the start of the two procedures in many medical practices.

The app for the e-prescription comes from Gematik GmbH, the majority of which is owned by the federal government and is responsible for setting up a secure health data network. The Federal Ministry of Health and Gematik hope that the e-prescription will increase drug safety for patients if all drugs taken are continuously checked for side effects and interactions. In addition, the entire process from the prescription in the doctor’s office to the collection by the patient to the billing with the health insurance companies should be made much more efficient.

A spokeswoman for Gematik emphasized that the KBV guideline did not change anything in terms of the legally stipulated introduction dates. “This is about the replacement procedure if doctors are technically unable to use the eAU or the e-prescription.”
