The digital pact for schools is apparently showing its first effects. At least the WiFi connection has improved in many cases. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to satisfaction with the IT equipment.
From the teachers’ point of view, the investments in digital technology in schools in recent years, for example through the digital pact for schools, have improved the WiFi connection of classrooms and learning platforms.
In contrast, they continue to see deficits in other areas. This was the result of a representative survey of teachers from secondary schools by the market research institute Kantar for the Deutsche Telekom Foundation.
According to this, 61 percent said that the classrooms at their schools have WiFi. In the last survey in 2017, it was 41 percent. A large majority (71 percent) see an improvement in WiFi availability due to investment programs. 80.5 percent also noticed improvements in learning platforms and learning management systems at their school over the past two years. According to the study, there is also a “significant development boost” in terms of the frequency with which digital media are used for teaching and learning.
In terms of overall satisfaction with the IT equipment in schools, however, little has changed: in 2017, 55.6 percent of teachers described the equipment as sufficient. In 2021 it was hardly any more: 56.6 percent. From the teachers’ point of view, there is also great potential for improvement in terms of technical support, according to the IT administrators who take care of the technology in the schools.
