The Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle with two Galileo navigation satellites on board successfully launched from the Kourou cosmodrome in French Guiana. This was announced by the Russian state corporation “Roscosmos” on Sunday, December 5.
“At 03:19:20 Moscow time, joint crews of Russian and European specialists launched the Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage and Galileo FOC navigation satellites. For 2021, this launch was the 21st launch of Russian space rockets and the first from the Guiana Space Center, ”the corporation’s website said in a statement.
Dmitry Rogozin, general director of Roscosmos, added that the launch took place at the estimated time, the separation of the head unit was confirmed.
“Our Soyuz worked as usual,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
The Soyuz-ST-B launch scheduled for December 4 from the Kuru cosmodrome was postponed for a day due to unfavorable weather conditions. The decision to re-postpone was made by the French side seven minutes before the launch.
On December 3, the launch of the launch vehicle was also postponed for a day. Then the reason was the unavailability of the French naval station for receiving telemetry information.
The European Global Navigation Satellite System Galileo is named after the Italian astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei. To date, a total of 28 satellites (including experimental and working vehicles) have been launched into low-earth orbit.
