The video caught a meteorite falling in the sky over Sochi near the village of Lazarevskoye. The phenomenon was noticed by local residents on Wednesday, December 8.
The celestial body fell over the sea near the coast. As “Vesti Sochi” reports with reference to scientists from the Southern Federal Institute, such a phenomenon is not so rare: – meteorites often burn up in the earth’s atmosphere.
According to the head of the astrophysical observatory of the Kuban State University, Alexander Ivanov, the bright flash is actually the result of the entry into the atmosphere of a celestial body – a fireball. This is the name of objects that in the celestial atmosphere are brighter than Venus, writes TASS.
In February, astrophysicists from Chelyabinsk State University said that large meteorites fall to Earth about once every 25 years. According to the study, several tens of thousands of tons of cosmic matter fall on the Earth’s surface every year, but most of them are dust and meteoroids with a diameter of less than 0.5 m – they burn up in the atmosphere.
At the same time, some asteroids are potentially dangerous for the Earth. One of them is the asteroid Apophis, about 330 m in size. Approaches with it will occur in 2029 and 2036. In 2029, it will approach the Earth at a distance of about 32 thousand km (10 times less than the distance to the Moon) and will be visible to the naked eye.
