The Omicron coronavirus strain can quickly displace Delta in Russia, judging by the dynamics it shows in South Africa and the UK. Professor of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, molecular biologist Georgy Bazykin stated this in an interview with Izvestia. According to him, this is a matter of several weeks, possibly months.
“Unfortunately, less than one case out of a thousand genomes are read in Russia among all infections. Therefore, “Omicron” may already be here, although we still do not see it, – said the specialist. – But how does the exponential process work? At first, it seems to you that growth is not happening very quickly. You have maybe a few weeks while the frequency of the variant remains low. And then it begins to grow like an avalanche, very quickly. In fact, this is the same exponential process, it is just that it is only gaining momentum at an early stage. “
This has already happened with Delta, when in just one month it ousted all previous options in Russia, said Georgy Bazykin.
“If we have the same scenario that is being implemented now in South Africa and the UK, then we will have the same,” he summed up.
