Testing of materials that are planned to be used in the MS-21 passenger aircraft will be completed by the end of this year, Izvestia was told on December 14 at the NTI Competence Center “Technologies for Modeling and Development of Functional Materials with Specified Properties”.
Certification fire tests are carried out at the Research Complex of the Center for Technological Support, which is located in Novosibirsk.
Experts test more than 20 materials from both Russian and foreign suppliers. Among them are composite carbon fiber materials for the wing and control units, the pylon to which the engine is attached, heat and sound insulation mats, interior interiors, luggage compartment bulkheads and others.
The main purpose of the tests is to test materials for fire resistance and other fire safety characteristics. The material is subjected to very harsh conditions, simulating a fire on board, and must withstand a specified amount of time. Successful completion of such tests is the key to the safety of passengers in situations of fire on board.
These tests have the status of certification, that is, they are necessary for the aircraft to obtain a certificate of airworthiness.
The center was opened on the basis of the Novosibirsk National Research State University in December 2021. It is planned to create new materials there, the properties of which will be determined through the purposeful creation and management of the structure of such a material at the micro level.
On July 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the latest MC-21 aircraft would soon be on the road.
MS-21 is a family of new generation Russian passenger aircraft. They will be released in several modifications from 150 to 211 seats. Such an aircraft made its first flight in May 2017. In December 2020, the MS-21-310 took off for the first time with Russian PD-14 engines.
