A vaccine that protects against COVID-19 by 100% may appear in the world. Scientists from Australia are developing a drug based on the vaccine against tuberculosis.
From the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists have been discussing the unusual properties of the BCG vaccine: the drug can “train” the immune system, and therefore the vaccinated populations suffer from coronavirus less. However, several scientific papers have been published that do not support these qualities of the tuberculosis vaccine.
A group of Australian scientists from the University of Sydney decided to try combining BCG with the COVID-19 vaccine. Experts have combined the bacillus Calmette-Guirine (BCG) with the trimeric form of the coronavirus spike antigen.
“We used the immunostimulatory properties of the bacillus Calmette-Guerin, an existing tuberculosis vaccine, to induce potent specific immunity to SARS-CoV-2,” the scientists explained in an article in NPJ Vaccines (part of the Nature group).
The formula was strengthened with alum – salts of some metals. The drug, dubbed BCG: CoVac, has been shown to be highly protective against coronavirus in mice. They were carried out in transgenic animals with the human ACE2 receptor, since normal mice are so far immune to COVID-19. 21 days after a single vaccination, the animals were injected with the coronavirus. Not a single mouse got sick, there were no traces of the COVID-19 pathogen in their respiratory tract and lungs, and antibody titers were higher than in people who had the infection. In the control group of unvaccinated animals, all individuals died six days after the introduction of the virus.
