Twitter was fined 10 million rubles for not removing prohibited content

A world court in Moscow fined Twitter 10 million rubles for failure to remove content banned in the Russian Federation. This was announced on Thursday, December 16, by the press service of the Tagansky District Court.

Judicial station No. 422 of the magistrates’ court found Twitter guilty under two protocols and sentenced to a fine of 10 million rubles – 3 million and 7 million rubles, respectively.

Taking into account all the fines imposed earlier on Twitter, the total amount is 55 million rubles.

Earlier, on November 25, it became known that the bailiffs opened six more cases against Twitter – on the enforced collection of 19 million rubles in fines.

Two days earlier, the Moscow Magistrates’ Court reported that the social network Twitter, as well as Meta (Facebook) and the Google search engine face multimillion-dollar fines in Russia for not removing content prohibited in the Russian Federation. So, Twitter can face a 12 million rubles fine, Google – 16 million rubles, and Meta – 20 million rubles.

On February 1, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. If they cannot independently assess the illegality of the content, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor within 24 hours.
