A magistrate court in Moscow fined Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) an additional 13 million rubles for refusing to remove content prohibited in the Russian Federation, the total amount of the fine imposed by Russian courts since the beginning of the year amounted to 83 million rubles. This was announced on Thursday, December 16, by the press service of the Tagansky District Court.
“The judicial district No. 422 of the magistrates’ court found Meta Platforms guilty on three counts of an administrative offense provided for in parts 2 and 4 of Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (“Failure to delete the information by the owner of the site if the obligation to delete such information is provided for by the legislation of the Russian Federation”) and imposed a penalty in the form of a fine in the amount of 13 million rubles, ”the court said.
Earlier, on December 3, Roskomnadzor reported that social networks Meta (Facebook), TikTok, as well as the Google search engine have been fined more than 110 million rubles since the beginning of the year for not removing content prohibited in Russia. According to the agency, to date, TikTok has paid the assigned fines in full, while Facebook has paid eight fines for a total of 26 million rubles.
On November 24, the Tagansky Court of Moscow approved the collection of RUB 21 million in fines from Facebook due to the refusal to remove content prohibited in the Russian Federation. Fines in five cases totaling RUB 21 million were issued by Facebook by a court order dated September 14, 2021.
On February 1, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. In the absence of an opportunity to independently assess the unlawfulness of the content within 24 hours, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor.
