Kindness and self-compassion are important not only for a stable psyche, but also for the health of a person’s cardiovascular system. This conclusion was made by scientists from the University of Pittsburgh in the USA.
“Much research has focused on how stress and other negative factors affect cardiovascular health, but the effects of positive factors such as self-compassion on the heart have been largely unexplored,” said study author Dr. Rebecca Thurston, quoted by Medicalxpress.
For their research, experts selected 200 women aged 45 to 67 years. They filled out a questionnaire, where they told how they take care of their psychological and physical health, after which they underwent a diagnostic ultrasound examination of the carotid artery.
The study found that women with higher self-compassion scores had thinner artery walls and fewer atherosclerotic plaques.
“Our data highlights the importance of showing kindness and self-compassion. Everyone is going through some pretty stressful times right now, but self-compassion can support your mental and physical health, ”concluded Dr. Thurston.
