Japanese scientists have developed a vaccine capable of removing senescent cells from the body, slowing down the aging process. Tohru Minamino, professor at Juntendo University in Japan, explained the effect of this drug. On Monday, December 20, he announced this to the REN TV channel.
“This is our main result. We found a specific marker that points to aging cells. And our vaccine works in such a way that it detects these markers and removes aging cells from our body, ”Minamino told REN TV on December 20.
According to him, the developed tool will allow in the future to fight age-related diseases such as dementia, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis.
The scientist said that tests on mice have been completed, now the vaccine is being tested on monkeys, with plans to conduct research on humans.
At the same time, initial trials in rodents, according to Minamino, showed that mice live longer with the vaccine. He also emphasized that both humans and mice are susceptible to the same diseases, but there is no need to rush to start research on humans yet.
“I believe we are very close to launching a vaccine for humans. We need to identify a few more markers for aging cells, and we can easily create a vaccine. There are already at least several ways to fight cancer using antibodies. I think we are very close, ”the Japanese scientist concluded.
In addition, he added that so far only one marker of senescent cells has been found, and work continues to find different markers for each disease.
According to Leonid Peshkin, a leading researcher and lecturer at the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School, the conclusions of the team of Japanese scientists are hasty. He noted that there is little evidence that the drug will become a vaccine for old age.
Peshkin clarified that strong evidence would be a study on healthy rodents that would have lived a long or healthy life under the influence of the vaccine.
Scientists of the Tyumen branch of the Institute of Fundamental and Clinical Immunology, together with the Mitokey Research Institute of Biotechnology and Mitokey ink US, have created their own vaccine against old age. The creator of the drug Denis Kaigorodov said that “vaccine” is the name of the project, but in the literal sense of the word, the drug is not a vaccine: it is a dietary supplement of natural origin.
He added that scientists from Russia primarily want to improve the quality of life, not its duration.
On August 19, a study by American scientists was published in the journal Nature, which showed that there is a drug to suppress the activity of molecules that cause aging in the body. Scientists have shown through research that the anti-HIV drug lamivudine can reduce age-related inflammation and other signs of aging in mice.
