An influenza vaccine capable of providing an immune response for several years was created by scientists from the Crimean Federal University. This was announced on December 22 by Oksana Andreeva, a junior researcher at the youth laboratory of molecular genetics and biotechnology at the University.
She noted that such a drug will make it possible to reduce the number of vaccinations for a person.
“By using highly conserved regions of the influenza virus genome, we are able to create universal vaccines with a long operational life. This will reduce the number of vaccinations for humans. At the moment, it is necessary to undergo revaccination every year, and our vaccine will become universal and will be effective for several years, “the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science quotes Andreeva.
The specialist said that a trial of the vaccine in mice will begin soon. Andreeva also stressed that the development will take into account all subtypes of the influenza virus.
“The main feature of the oligonucleotide vaccine is that it is based on conserved regions of the influenza virus genome, therefore it is capable of providing a long-term immune response. This means that the vaccine will take into account all subtypes of the influenza virus that may arise and resist them, ”said the scientist.
She added that this vaccine is unique because no one in the world has tried to create a nucleic acid-based drug that has an antigen-presenting region and is able to activate the immune response.
It was reported yesterday that more than 65 million Russians, or 44.5% of the country’s population, have been vaccinated against influenza this season.
The SMM edition of Izvestia MIC has prepared a unique special project in honor of the Year of Science – 2021: Science and Technology. What is being invented in Russia ”. It tells about the most interesting, large, promising projects that can change the lives of people and society as a whole.
