Court in Moscow has appointed Meta Platforms a turnover fine of 1.9 billion rubles

A magistrate court in Moscow found Meta Platforms (Facebook) guilty of an administrative offense and imposed a turnover fine on the company in the amount of more than 1.9 billion rubles. This was reported on December 24 in the press service of the court.

“By the decision of the magistrate of the judicial district No. 422 of the Tagansky district of Moscow, the Meta Platforms company (the former name of Facebook) was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 5 of Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. She was sentenced to an administrative fine in the amount of 1,990,984,950 rubles, ”the statement reads.

This article concerns the non-deletion of information prohibited in Russia.

As explained in Roskomnadzor, Facebook and Instagram have not removed more than 2 thousand materials with prohibited information, this threatens with new turnover fines.

Also on Friday, the magistrate’s court ruled to fine Google 7.2 billion rubles for failure to remove prohibited information.

At the same time, on December 16, Meta Platforms imposed another 13 million rubles in a fine for refusing to remove prohibited content.

On February 1, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. In the absence of an opportunity to independently assess the unlawfulness of the content within 24 hours, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor.
