Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to encourage regions in which landmark research projects are launched and breakthrough developments are carried out. The head of state announced this on Friday, December 24, at a joint meeting of the State Council and the Council for Science and Education.
“Another major topic of our meeting is further steps to build up the innovative potential of Russian regions as a key condition for the well-being of a high quality of life for people throughout our large country,” Putin said.
The President stressed that the development of Russia and its regions is possible only together with science.
“It is fundamentally important that they find direct practical application in healthcare, education, in the work of transport and communal infrastructure, in solving environmental, social and other socially significant problems,” the head of state added.
According to the Russian leader, the country has consistently expanded the country’s scientific geography and research infrastructure.
“As a result, the number of universities that conduct research activities has almost tripled. Research universities, flagship higher educational institutions in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation are becoming the real flagships of entire territories, “Putin concluded.
Earlier that day, the head of state said that researchers who work in the north of the country should receive bonuses not in a few years, but immediately. He recalled that specialists in such scientific fields as environmental protection, biology, as well as scientists studying climate change work in the Far North.
Also on Friday, Putin said that 2021, declared the Year of Science and Technology, should continue with a whole scientific decade. He also counts on “the interested participation of the regions in this work.” The head of state asked them to help create centers for scientific volunteering, including on the basis of universities.
