Spanish police have arrested a British man on suspicion of being involved in a massive hacking attack on celebrity Twitter accounts.
An international arrest warrant from the US judiciary was available against the 22-year-old, the newspaper “La Vanguardia” reported today. The man was arrested the day before in Estepona near Málaga in southern Spain. In the unprecedented Twitter hack last July, the accounts of numerous celebrities were hijacked, including former US President Barack Obama, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Company accounts, such as those from Apple, were also hacked.
The hijacked accounts then tweeted users to send the cryptocurrency Bitcoin to a specific account – combined with the promise to repay the amount twice. According to the investigators, more than 100,000 US dollars were collected.
An 18-year-old, who is considered to be the mastermind behind the attack, confessed to a court in Florida in March and accepted three years of juvenile imprisonment.
