Scientists from the Swiss University of Basel discovered a new section of the masseter muscle in humans and for the first time described this tissue layer in detail. Researchers on December 20 commented on their discovery to the ScienceDaily scientific portal.
“This deep section of the masseter muscle clearly differs from the other two layers in terms of its course and function,” one of the authors of the discovery, Dr. Sylvia Mesei, told the publication.
According to her, due to the location of the muscle fibers, the department stabilizes the lower jaw and can pull it back towards the ear.
The discovery was made in the process of placing 12 heads of deceased people in formalin, who donated their bodies to science. Scientists also analyzed computed tomography of 16 more bodies and MRI data of one living person.
The new layer was named Musculus masseter pars coronidea (coronoid part of the masseter muscle), as it attaches to the coronoid process of the lower jaw.
Previously, it was believed that the masseter muscle consists of two parts: superficial and deep, but many scientists doubted this theory due to contradictions.
“It is known that literally everything in human anatomy has been studied over the past hundred years. And the more surprising is our discovery, because it is comparable in scale to the discovery of a new species of vertebrates by zoologists, ”said one of the leaders of the study, Professor Jens Christoph Thürp.
On December 25, Australian zoologist Paul Marek in an interview with Izvestia spoke about the discovery of a new creature with a record number of legs – 1306. According to him, to accurately determine the number of limbs, scientists counted the segments of this creature.
The SMM edition of Izvestia MIC has prepared a unique special project in honor of the Year of Science – 2021: Science and Technology. What is being invented in Russia ”. It tells about the most interesting, large, promising projects that can change the life of people and society as a whole.
